Flock of construction cranes provide a sure sign of spring

In another sign that winter is loosening its grip on the Lower Mainland, a flock of construction cranes grace Vancouver’s skyline.
The eight cranes are actually part of the Millennium Water project in south east False Creek. About 1,100 permanent condominium units are being built to LEED Gold standard and will be used as the Athlete’s Village for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
After the games, the pre-sold condominium units will be turned over to their respective owners. Millennium Water is expected to be completed by November 2009 and will consist of 15 to 25 buildings.
The developer, Millennium Group, has engaged the architectural firm Merrick to work with others such as GBL and Walter Francl on design.
Stantec Consulting Ltd. is designing the public infrastructure required in the Olympic Village. The development is designed to be Canada’s first LEED Gold neighbourhood.
A waterfront community centre will also be designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification. A number of different construction managers are being used on different parcels of the project.
