Government approves plan for Tsawwassen power transmission line

The B.C. government has approved plans by the B.C. Transmission Corporation to build a controversial new overhead power transmission line in Tsawwassen.

The B.C. government announced on March 17 that construction will start about June 1. Some local residents were concerned about the health effects of the line and wanted the BCTC to bury the line underground. The government said it would cost too much to bury the lines and the new overhead system has been designed with strict health and safety measures that exceed guidelines endorsed by the World Health Organization.

The project will ensure a reliable supply of power for over 700,000 residents, social infrastructure and business services on Vancouver Island and the southern Gulf Islands.
