Construction worker hospitalized after Calgary explosion

A construction worker was knocked to the ground and sent to hospital by an explosion in Calgary last week. Emergency Medical Services in Calgary responded to reports of an explosion at noon on May 26, at the 5900 block of MacLeod Trail south.

Upon arrival, paramedics were directed to a site in the northeast corner of the Chinook Centre parking lot, where a construction crew was drilling holes into the ground to a depth of 40 feet. Even though the 22-year old was knocked to the ground, fire crews reported no visible flames or explosive gasses in the air. Paramedics transported the man to the hospital in stable condition and there were no other injuries.

Fire officials guessed that the drilling may have made contact with a pocket of hydrocarbons held within the ground since it is at an old Shell gas station location.

The cause of this explosion is under investigation.
