Manitoba Hydro plans new Riel Converter Station
Manitoba Hydro plans to construct a $700 million converter station on a 110-hectare site north of the Deacon Reservoir between Red River Floodway and Highway 207, in the Regional Municipality of Springfield. The Riel Converter Station will boost transmission reliability in Winnipeg and southern Manitoba.
Manitoba Hydro currently has 76.7 ha at the Riel site, and 33.9 ha must still be acquired.
Construction of the station is part of the Riel Reliability Improvement Initiative, which also involves cutting and re-terminating an international transmission line that comes from the Dorsey Converter Station.
Environmental approval from Manitoba Conservation and the National Energy Board is anticipated summer 2009. Site improvement designs are being done by KGS Group.
The converter station is anticipated to be operational by 2014.
