EllisDon’s South Health Campus project sets record as largest contract in company history

On July 17, 2008, EllisDon announced that the company recently signed a $1.076-billion contract with Calgary Health Region to construct Phase 1 of the new South Health Campus in Calgary.

“This is truly an amazing milestone for EllisDon,” says Geoff Smith, EllisDon's President and CEO. “A $76 million contract is a great achievement anywhere in EllisDon, but when you tack a billion on to the front of that, it sort of takes the breath away.”

Construction is already underway at the South Health Campus. Over 200 workers are currently deployed at the site and this number will jump to over 1000 when the interior portions of the work commence.

EllisDon has already awarded a significant portion of the project to subcontractors through a Construction Management process that allows the construction and design to be fast-tracked while at the same time keeping the project on or below budget.

This is a process EllisDon has used on several other projects, including the highly successful Alberta's Children's Hospital.

“The sub-contractors are in early with us doing the planning, value-engineering and identifying long lead items and durations,” says Vince Davoli, EllisDon's Senior Vice President for the Calgary area.

The South Health Campus is located on 44 acres in south Calgary. The building will feature outdoor views, natural lighting, open spaces, gardens and wetlands, and café-style retail walkways.

The Campus is also working towards a Silver Certification in the LEED(R) (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) “green building” program. Following LEED standards will result in energy and water savings, and a healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff.
