Alcan moves closer to construction of Kitimat aluminum smelter
Alcan’s long awaited modernization to their Kitimat aluminum smelter is one step closer to construction.
Alcan recently announced that Bechtel will provide engineering and construction manager services for their $2.5 billion modernization.
The project will upgrade the existing 54-year old smelter using state-of-the-art AP technology to increase its aluminum production capacity by 125,000 tones, using hydroelectric power form Rio Tinto Alcan’s Kemano power station.
As well, the modernization will reduce greenhouse gas emission by more than 40 percent per year. Construction start is scheduled for 2009, with completion scheduled for 2011.
