Calgary firefighters rescue worker trapped inside concrete-mixing truck

On September 10, 2008, a man believed to be in his 40s was breaking up dried concrete from inside the drum walls of a concrete mixing truck when a large slab fell on him.

Fire crews had to cut a four foot hole in the side of the drum using a large saw and a plasma cutter to reach him.

Rescuers used a high volume fan to force air into the drum to ventilate it because of all the particles from the cutting. After the man was freed, paramedics provided advanced life support treatment.

The man sustained a serious injury to his left leg and was transported to the Foothills Hospital in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

Occupational Health and Safety and Calgary Police are investigating.
