B.C. Ready Mixed Concrete Association

Seven Construction Safety Network member companies receive BCRMCA safety awards

The B.C. Ready Mixed Concrete Association (BCRMCA) handed out their first-ever Safety Awards during their recent annual conference.

The association partnered with the Construction Safety Network to recognize the safety achievements of member companies.

Seven different tokens of recognition were handed out during the weekend.

The five corporate awards categories were divided up by the number of hours each company worked.

The jury looked at lost time accidents for the previous year, year over year performance for those companies that reduced lost time accidents by 50 per cent from the previous year and safety strategies employed by the companies.

Skandia Concrete took home top honours in the zero to 15,000 hours category. The company had no lost time accidents.

Cumberland Ready Mix Ltd. was tops in the 15,000 to 50,000 hours category, while Mayco Mix Ltd. was recognized as the safest company in the 50,000 to 100,000 hour award category.

Valley Rite Mix, a division of Lafarge Canada Inc. was the winner in the 100,000 to 250,000 hour category.

The 2008 innovation award was given to Lafarge Canada Inc, Ready-Mix Division for the their development of a driving school program for ready-mixed concrete truck drivers.

Mayco Mix Ltd. was a double winner as the company also picked up the five year corporate award. The company had no lost time accidents between 2003 and 2007.

The president’s award was given to John Hindson, with Lafarge Canada Inc., for his leadership, effort and service as a safety champion for the ready-mixed concrete industry.

The winners were selected by the BCRMCA’s Safety Steering Committee, consisting of individuals in the safety field from member companies and a representative from the Construction Safety Network.

The awards were presented during the BCRMCA’s annual conference in Penticton in early October.
