Runaway cable spool fatally injures Edmonton-area worker

A 27-year-old worker was killed on a construction site about 20 km west of Edmonton last week.

He was laying cable in a shallow trench about 90 cm wide and 80 cm deep at a residential site in Spruce Grove, Alberta.

The cable was being rolled out from a spool.

At some point, the spool left the roll, on the back of the tractor, went on a run into the trench and crushed the worker, said Workplace Health and Safety spokesman Barrie Harrison.

He added that the spool is usually fixed to the tractor by a cable or chain.

The dead man was employed by Extreme Excavating and Backhoe Services Ltd, which is based in Spruce Grove.

The incident is under investigation by Occupational Health and Safety officers.
