Rio Tinto Alcan invests in new run-of-river hydro project at Shipshaw power station

Rio Tinto Alcan is investing US$228 million to construct a new 225-megawatt high efficiency turbine-alternator unit on Saguenay river at Chute-à-Caron/Shipshaw complex on lands owned by the company.

The project includes construction of a 245-meter water intake tunnel for penstock installation, construction of a powerhouse building, which will shelter the turbine and auxiliary equipment, and a tailrace returning the water to the main stream.

With this clean renewable energy turbine, Rio Tinto Alcan plans to replace four hydro generator units at the Chute-à-Caron power station to ensure more efficient river-water use without alteration of the downstream flows.

Construction works, which have just started, are expected to be completed by December 2012.
