Imperial Oil awards Kearl oilsands contract to AMEC

AMEC, an international engineering and project management firm, has been selected by Imperial Oil to oversee its planned Kearl oilsands facility north of Fort McMurray.

Neil Bruce, chief operating officer of AMEC’s natural resources division, said that the contract recognizes his company’s expertise in oilsands development.

The contract for engineering, procurement and construction management will be for phase one of the $8 billion project.

AMEC won the contract after undertaking the front end engineering design work for the Kearl project.

Imperial Oil will make the decision whether not to go ahead with the project later this year.

After a legal battle in federal court that lasted several months, the company was given the go-head to start work on its controversial project in June 2008.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans reinstated a key water permit for the site, which it had revoked in March.

At the time, the judge ruled that the federal-provincial assessment panel approved the Kearl development without adequately explaining its rationale. The fisheries department then nullified Imperial’s permit.
