Ryan Westersund, 17, of Foothills Composite in Okotoks, Alberta shows off his welding skills during a Skills Canada provincial competition May 13 at the Northlands AgriCom in Edmonton. Winners from the event qualify for the Canada Skills national competition in Charlottetown PEI May 20-23, which is the only national, Olympic-style, multi-trade and technology competition for young students and apprentices in the country. Winnners from last year’s Skills Canada qualified for the World Skills competition on home soil in Calgary in early September. About 1,000 competitors from 50 different countries will compete in a variety of disciplines including carpentry, welding, bricklaying and more.
