Worker fatally crushed in Edmonton

A concrete slab crushed and killed a 23-year-old construction worker on the south side of Edmonton late last month.

“Workers were cutting a door through a six inch thick wall when the slab let loose from the wall and crushed one of the workers,” said Chris Chodan, spokesman for Alberta Occupational Health and Safety.

The 23 year old male was rushed to hospital, but later passed away.

The deceased worked for Derrick Concrete and the prime contractor on the site was Willow Spring Construction.

According to the Derrick Construction website, wall sawing is a fast and dust-free method of cutting through up to 21 inch (53 cm) concrete walls.

The unit is hydraulically powered and eliminates the structural integrity of the concrete.

The incident is under investigation.
