Vancouver Regional Construction Association award winners have golden time at gala

The Vancouver Regional Construction Association announced their Gold Awards of Excellence winners during an Oct. 1 gala at the Hyatt Regency.

Previously, three Silver Award winners were announced in each category, with one Gold winner celebrated at the 21st annual celebration.

“The Gold Award winners are truly leaders in the industry,” said Keith Sashaw, VRCA president.

“We are very proud to celebrate the exceptional growth of our industry over the last 21 years.”

For only the second time ever, the Landmark Award was given out.

PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. won it for their work on the Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion.

“The convention centre is a leading project in Vancouver and British Columbia,” said Sashaw

“The awards committee recognized the significant contribution to the city...”

The value of the projects entered into the competition set a record.

This year’s 240 entries represent more than $2 billion of construction throughout B.C.

“Crossing the $2 billion mark is a huge milestone for the awards,” said Sashaw.

“The value and excellence of this year’s entries reflect the outstanding quality of work done by VRCA members.”

This year’s General Contractor over $50 million Award winner was Dominion Fairmile Construction for its work on the Richmond Olympic Oval.

George Third & Son and Status Electrical also won Gold Awards for work on the same project.

The General Contractor $20 Million to $50 Million Gold Award went to Scott Construction Group for the West Vancouver Community Centre.

The third and final general contractor award also went to PCL.

The General Contractor Under $20 Million award went to PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. for the Westminster Centre Expansion

PCL WESTCOAST CONSTRUCTORS INC.

The Vancouver Convention Centre earned PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. the Landmark Award.

The president and the chairman also selected Gold Award winners.

The President’s Trade Award went to Solid Rock Steel and Fabricating Co Ltd. for the Canada Line - Aberdeen Station, Lansdowne Station, Brighouse Station, and Marine Drive Station.

The Chairman’s Trade Award went to George Third & Son for the Richmond Olympic Oval.

In addition to the Gold Awards of Excellence, a number of other awards were announced.

The General Contractor of the Year 2009 Award went to Dominion Fairmile Construction Ltd., while Flynn Canada took home the Trade Contractor of the Year 2009 Award.

Bud Britton of the Construction Labour Relations Association of BC was named educator of the Year. The 2009 Outstanding Woman in Construction Award was presented to Katherine Hamilton of Mosaic Avenue Construction Ltd.

Len Robinson received the Life Time Achievement 2009 Award.

A couple of innovation awards were also handed out.

Jeda Mechanical picked up the Innovation Award for their work on the O2 and their flexible poly-based capillary mat system.

The Construction Workplace Health and Safety Innovation went to Stuart Olson Constructors Inc. for their Heavy Duty Roller System

Mechanical Contractor up to $3 Million award went to Alpha Mechanical, while the Mechanical Contractor over $3 Million award went to GML Mechanical Ltd.

Electrical contractors also got to bask in the limelight.

The Electrical Contractors up to $2 Million award went to Bridge Electric and the Electrical Contractors over $2 Million award went to Status Electrical.
