British Columbia’s best steel projects win awards

The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) recently handed out awards for the best steel projects in the British Columbia region.

“It was a bumper crop of projects from the last year and a half,” said Rob Third, awards chairman.

This year’s competition included a winner in the sustainability category for the first time ever.

The category has been around for three years, but this is first time that a project earned the recognition.

The Award of Excellence went to Canron Western Constructors Ltd.’s Aisle 6 Re-use project in Edmonton. The company had a long unused pre-engineered building in Vancouver dismantled and shipped to Edmonton to be used as part of a new plant.

“It was the first time a project was worthy,” explained Third.

The engineer was Janto Engineering and the steel detailer and erector was Supreme Steel Ltd.

The Award of Excellence in the architectural category went to the Robson Square Domes project.

The architects were Hughes Condon Marler Architects, as well as Clive Grout Architects.

George Third and Son was the fabricator and the steel detailer. The steel erector was KWH Constructors.

“The judges were excited by the expression of steel – stainless steel actually,” said Third, whose company was part of the team that worked on the project.

The Central Valley Greenway and Canron Western Constructor Ltd’s Aisle 6 re-use project also earned awards at the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction’s B.C. Steel Structure Awards of Excellence.

An Award of Merit was also handed out in the architectural category.

It went to the team that worked on the Central Valley Greenway Bridge project in Burnaby, B.C.

The architect was Patkau Architects Inc.

The structural engineer was Delcan, the fabricator was George Third and Son Ltd., the steel detailer was International Steel Detailing and the steel erector was KWH Constructors.

Engineering companies also got in on the kudos.

An Award of Excellence was presented in the engineering category to the Richmond Speed Skating Oval.

The composite wood trusses were of particular interest.

Fast + Epp Engineers were the structural engineers on the project and Somerset Engineering performed the construction engineering.

The fabricator was George Third & Son Ltd., the steel detailer was Tru-Line Drafting and KWH Constructors did the steel erecting.

The project has earned a number of national and international awards. “It’s exciting for the team,” said Third.

“It looks like it’s made of wood, but there is a lot of steel.”

One more project award was presented.

It is called the Krentz Award and it is given out as special recognition of an extraordinary design solution in the field of steel construction. It was presented to the team that worked on the Vancouver Convention Center, which included Glotman Simpson Consulting Engineers, PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc., Canron Western Constructors Ltd., and Dowco Consultants Ltd.

More than just project teams took home some hardware from the gala event.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Bill Baird for his dedication to the advancement and understanding of steel structures in B.C. and Canada.

“We saw him as an instrumental part of the industry for many years,” Third said. “We thought he should be recognized.”

The awards were handed out at a gala at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel in Vancouver.
