Enbridge, Renewable Energy Systems to develop wind project in Chatham, Ontario
A wind energy project in Ontario is getting a major injection of capital, as Enbridge expands into the renewable energy industry in the province.
Calgary-based Enbridge and Montreal-based Renewable Energy Systems (RES) Canada Inc. have entered into an agreement to develop the 99 megawatt (MW) Talbot Wind Energy Project near Chatham, Ontario.
Total investment is expected to reach about $285 million, with Enbridge having a majority interest.
The Talbot Wind Energy Project will be constructed by RES Canada, an affiliate of RES Americas, under a fixed price, engineering, procurement and construction agreement.
“The Talbot Wind Energy Project will advance Enbridge’s commitment to an environmentally neutral footprint by 2015, while generating attractive economics,” said Patrick D. Daniel, president and CEO of Enbridge Inc.
The Talbot Wind Energy Project marks RES Canada’s arrival in the Canadian renewables market with the first fully integrated wind project which was developed and will be constructed by RES Canada.
An estimated 300 construction jobs will be created by the project, which is scheduled for completion in December 2010.
It will produce enough clean wind energy to power 33,000 average Canadian homes.
The project will utilize 43 Siemens 2.3 MW wind turbines.
Under the terms of the agreement, Siemens will provide operations and maintenance services for the wind turbines under a five year, fixed-price agreement.
