Highway upgrades designed to meet demand

Highway 63 is no longer able to accommodate the volume traffic generated in Fort McMurray, with about 50,000 vehicles per day using the road to cross existing bridges. This critical transportation link carries workers and heavy trucks with oversized equipment to and from oilsands construction projects.

To address this problem, the highway is being twinned, upgraded and repaved in several sections to reduce congestion, increase capacity and enhance safety. Flatiron got the $300 million contract, which also includes work on the Thickwood Boulevard and Confederation Way interchanges and a new overpass structure.

The overall roadway and bridges are under the jurisdiction of Alberta Transportation. The Consulting Engineering team comprises CH2M Hill, Stantec Consulting and AECOM among others.
