Canadian Natural Resources, North West Upgrading team up to propose new bitumen refinery
Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) and North West Upgrading (NWU) Inc. are submitting a joint proposal to the Alberta Government to construct and operate a bitumen refinery near Redwater, Alberta.
As the largest heavy oil producer in Canada, CNRL has also agreed to acquire 50 per cent of the assets of NWU.
NWU’s has already obtained land and permits as well as completed some engineering.
The facility is targeted to be built in three identical phases and the combined phases would generate more than 101,000 person years of employment during construction and 417,000 person years of employment over 30 years of operations.
Phase 1 of the proposed facility will allow CO2 to be taken from the facility and used for enhanced oil recovery.
This CO2 management system would make the facility one of the most advanced upgrading and refinery complexes in the world from an environmental perspective.
CNRL owns the Horizon project near Fort McMurray and has extensive heavy oil operations in eastern Alberta.
