Saskatchewan mega mall proposed

A Saskatoon-based real estate investment firm is proposing the construction of a massive shopping complex in a small Saskatchewan town, which could become the largest wholesale mall in North America.

Last month, Brightenview Development held a community information open house for residents of Dundurn to learn more about the ambitious commercial development.

The company is proposing the construction of the Dundurn International Exhibition Centre, which would be an international commodity trade and wholesale distribution centre located on 155 acres of commercial and industrial land.

Brightenview has hired Aecom for the architectural design of the project, which will have more than 6,474,700 sq. ft. of commercial space.

The project involves the construction of two buildings for trade exhibition and one business strip mall.

The building complex would house 700 showroom stores for international enterprises, manufacturers and distributors.

For this reason, the complex will be built and equipped with supporting facilities such as warehouse distribution centre, business services centre, restaurants as well as a centre square, a parking lot, landscaped green space and an artificial lake.

The plan includes a shuttle service running between Dundurn and the Saskatoon airport to transport purchasers back and forth.

The first phase of the project is estimated to cost $200 million.

The project is scheduled to break ground in the fall of 2013 and is expected to be complete in about two years.

Dundurn is located about 41 km from downtown Saskatoon travelling south on Hwy 11.

Brightenview Development International purchased a quarter-section of former Crown land in Dundurn, after examining locations across North America and sites around Saskatoon and Corman Park.

The municipality is known for its agriculture, including dry land farming techniques and raising livestock.
