Checkwitch Poiron Architects earned a Wood Design Citation Award for the Nanaimo Cruise Ship Terminal Building.

Four British Columbia projects have earned recognition at the 2012 North American Wood Design Awards.

“The projects featured in this year’s awards program serve not only as examples of the unique capabilities of wood as a building material, but also as a reminder for the possibility of broader applications of wood in future projects,” explained Etienne Lalonde, vice-president of market development for the Canadian Wood Council.

More than 100 entries were submitted into the competition with 10 winners selected.

Perkins + Will earned a Canadian Wood Council Award for the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS) at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C.

McFarlane Green Biggar Architecture + Design won a Wood Design Merit Award for the North Vancouver City Hall.

MacDonald & Lawrence Timber Framing Ltd. won the Special Recognition for Wood Heritage Award for its work on the Kinsol Trestle.

The final award for a B.C. project went to MacDonald & Lawrence Timber Framing Ltd. in Cobble Hill for the Kinsol Trestle, which is also located on Vancouver Island.

The project earned the Special Recognition for Wood Heritage Award.

An architectural jury based their selections on various considerations such as creativity, appropriate use of wood materials in satisfying clients’ building and site requirements, and innovative design.

Other winning projects were from across Canada and the U.S. The Wood Design Awards were created by the Canadian Wood Council (CWC) and implemented through its Wood Design & Building magazine.

The CWC is the national association representing manufacturers of Canadian wood products used in construction.

It is the only North American-wide awards program to publicly recognize and award excellence and innovation in wood architecture.

“The Wood Design Awards is an opportunity to recognize wood projects that inspire the way we think about wood and its applications,” said Theresa Rogers, magazine editor.

The awards ceremony was held last month in Ottawa.
