VRCA and SICA honour member contributions

QUEEN ELIZABETH II DIAMOND JUBILEE MEDAL

RICHARD GILBERT

Ron McFee, Robert Lashin and Don Vandervoort proudly display their Diamond Jubilee medals and plaques.

Two regional construction associations in B.C. recently presented deserving members with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medals.

The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) presented medals to Don Vandervoort, Robert Lashin and Ron McFee.

“These three gentlemen exemplify the values of the B.C. construction industry, and it is our privilege to celebrate their lives and careers,” said Jan Robinson, the association’s interim president.

Vandervoort worked for a variety of construction firms and finished his career as the Vancouver manager for Flynn Canada.

He has held a number of board positions both within the industry and the community. He was instrumental in getting the local construction industry involved with building Honour House, Canada’s first respite home for members of the armed forces and first responders.

In 2010, he received VRCA’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Lashin joined Houle Electric as a junior engineer fresh out of UBC in 1973 and worked his way up to president in 1997. He too has been a part of numerous industry boards and volunteers in the community.

McFee retired last year from Stuart Olson Dominion Construction, where he was a senior project director.

He and his company worked on some of the venues for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Before that, he worked for Cana Construction in Calgary in the lead up to the 1988 Winter Olympic Games and worked on several venues including Calgary’s Saddle Dome arena.

He is known for his involvement with the VRCA and other association boards, as well as coaching minor sports.

All three recipients are VRCA life members.

The Southern Interior Construction Association (SICA) presented medals to Phil Long and Terry Brown.

Long is an operations manager for Maple Reinders.

Brown is the owner of STBR Consulting.

“SICA is extremely proud to have two of our family recognized by the receipt of this auspicious award,” said SICA president Bill Everitt.
