Alberta leads the employment charge

Total employment in Canada increased slightly in November led by the province of Alberta, while employment declined in B.C.

According to Statistics Canada, employment continued on a slight upward trend for the third consecutive month, edging up 22,000 or 0.1 per cent in November.

As a result, the unemployment rate held steady at 6.9 per cent for the third month in a row.

However, total employment increased by 179,000 or 1 per cent to about 17.8 million from November 2012 to November 2013, which caused the unemployment rate to decline by 0.3 percentage points, over the same period.

Employment in construction fell by 18,000 in November. Despite this decline, the number of people working in construction was up 57,000 or 4.5 per cent on a year-over-year basis.

After two months of little change, the number of people working in Alberta increased by 11,000 or 0.5 per cent to 2.248 million in November. However, the unemployment rate increased 0.3 percentage points to 4.7 per cent, as more people were seeking work.

Compared with 12 months earlier, employment in Alberta was up 78,000 or 3.6 per cent, which is the fastest pace of year-over-year growth among the provinces. In B.C., employment fell 0.4 per cent or 8,200 people in November compared October to 2.296 million people. In addition, employment fell by 0.7 per cent or 15,500 people from the same month in 2012.
