With a focus on commercial, institutional and industrial construction in Western Canada, this issue of the Journal of Commerce takes a snapshot of the year that was, as 2013 comes to a close.

High River Deals with Flooding - June 26

Construction crews and heavy equipment are building a berm across a washed out 498 Avenue, west of the Highway 2 overpass, in flood-ravaged High River, Alberta.

Construction crews are busy building Meccanica, a new residential development in Vancouver, B.C. Cressey Development Corp. is the owner and general contractor for the project that will include a 15-storey tower connected to a seven storey structure by a glass-enclosed pedestrian breezeway. Meccanica will include 170 units with ground level townhouses. Rafii Architects Inc. did the design. Consulting engineers include John Bryson & Partners (structural), Sterling Cooper & Associates Ltd. (mechanical) and Nemetz (S/A) & Associates Ltd. (electrical).

Burnaby Office Tower - March 27

Metrotower III is taking its place in Burnaby, B.C.'s skyline. Ledcor Group of Companies is the construction manager for the 29-storey office tower, which is seeking LEED Platinum certification. Stantec Architecture Ltd. is both the architect and the interior designer. PWL Partnership Inc. is the landscape architect. Consultants on the project include Nemetz (S/A) & Associates Ltd. (electrical), Integral Group (mechanical) and Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd. (structural). The highrise will include a 30 foot high glass entrance lobby, which is connected to Metrotower II.

The Skills Canada National Competition is a multi-trade and technology competition for young students and apprentices from across the country. Every year, the event brings together more than 500 young people from all regions of Canada, along with their parents and advisors, to compete in more than 40 trade and technology areas. Travis Milkowski (above) from British Columbia competed in the Carpentry - Secondary category.
