Patricia Williams, staff writer for the Daily Commercial News (DCN) for the last 46 years, has chosen to transition to a freelance writing career. In this photo, Patricia is honoured by Mark Casaletto, vice-president and general manager of Reed Construction Data, on her 40th year with the DCN.

As Daily Commercial News (DCN) staff writer Patricia Williams transitions to an independent freelance writing career, after 46 years with the newspaper, many Ontario construction stakeholders applaud the genuine interest she displayed in the industry she covered.

The Daily Commercial News is a sister newspaper to the Journal of Commerce and her stories have appeared in the paper a number of times.

“Everybody contributes in some way, but when you contribute 46 years of your life to a business, you are part of its foundation,” said Mark Casaletto, vice-president and general manager of Reed Construction Data.

“How do you thank somebody for giving 46 years of their life to one business? It’s impossible.”

Williams began working for the DCN in 1968 and she chose Jan. 31 as her last day with the Reed Construction Data publication.

The DCN can be counted among the publications she will likely write for as she pursues her freelance writing career.

Williams’ industry reporting shed light on intriguing construction projects, architecture, health and safety issues and local construction association news.

“For selfish reasons, I’m quite sorry to see Patricia leave the Daily Commercial News. She’s been excellent to deal with,” said John Gamble, president of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies-Canada.

“She seemed genuinely interested in our issues and our concerns and she really had an ability to articulate a lot of the industry positions that aren’t so easily translated to the written word.”

Grand Valley Construction Association president Martha George called Williams someone who “really gets” the industry.

“She is very, very easy to talk to, she asks relevant questions and she really understands the construction industry. She’s very honest in terms of what she reports and very accurate,” she said.

“She’s been a good friend to me and a good friend to the industry all along.”

Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA) president Clive Thurston said he has immensely enjoyed working with Williams.

“From the OGCA’s perspective, we have nothing but the highest regard for her and what she has done for our industry, including helping bring us together with the Daily Commercial News and helping to promote the industry in a positive way,” he said.

“She is very good at building relationships and understanding the industry and the people within it. She did a great service over the years for all of us.”

Canadian Construction Association president Michael Atkinson really appreciated Williams’ drive to provide accurate reporting and to understand the issues at hand.

“We always found her to be very professional, very accurate, someone who was knowledgeable, who was eager to learn and to make sure that the information was accurate,” he said.

“She was also eager, as well, to make sure she had talked to the people that she should talk to.”
