The 2010 Annual International Conference on Research Facilities

    May 17-18, 2010 - Toronto, Canada

ORINDA, Calif., March 2 /CNW/ -- This coming May in Toronto research directors, capital project planners, and facility managers from top research institutions in Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Asia will meet at the 22nd annual International Conference on Research Facilities to get the latest thinking and details on new research facilities plans, project management, and research facility operations for new and fast-growing areas of science. The two-day conference runs May 17-18 at Toronto's Westin Harbour Castle Hotel.

The major issues on the agenda include getting more research results per square foot of space, lowering the costs of building and renovating research facilities, reducing facility operating costs, facilitating the new collaborative multi-disciplinary research models, planning facilities help to promote commercial technology spin-offs, and designing energy-efficient and sustainable laboratories.

Among the 28 sessions of the conference are reports on new initiatives at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, University Health Network Canada, Stanford University, Scripps-Florida, Cornell University, Brookhaven National Lab, King Abdullah University - Saudi Arabia, the University of Pennsylvania, and many more.

An important feature of the conference is the opportunity for participants to tour a number of prominent Toronto research facilities including The Toronto Centre for Phenogenomics, The Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomedical Research, the MaRS Centre & Toronto Medical Discovery Tower, and the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael's Hospital.

For conference participants who are relatively new to the research facilities planning field, a special pre-conference program is being held on May 15th on The Fundamentals of Modern Lab Planning, Designs, and Project Management. This one-day course will cover the specialized vocabulary, concepts, processes, standards, metrics, scientific equipment, and lab furniture systems involved in laboratory design and lab project management. Participants in the "fundamentals" course have the opportunity to tour one of the Toronto research sites on the day following the course and then attend the full conference beginning May 17th.
